Just Keep Swimming

It's a good time to keep a seaworthy vessel in reach...
.
Two weeks ago there was excessive rain in New England which caused river flooding for many cities n towns. Folks who'd never had a problem before had water coming in, roads closed, n homes flooded. Folks were calling the high water a "hundred year" happening.
.
Now that the ground is saturated, water levels are all high, n there's no room for containing or absorbing more- the past several days has seen the second "Hundred year" storm rains, raising river levels again within a few weeks time. This time around many rivers are expected to set new records. The rivers won't finish cresting for two more days.
.
The last time there was such high rainfall in one month was back in August of 1955 as heard on WCVB Ch 5 news (Pics n info available at thebostonchannel).
.
Route 24 in Fall River is closed due to river flooding over the road. There was a mudslide, n a huge road sink-hole washout. In Free town a whole 1k home neighborhood is cut-off without a passable road. Middleboro is also getting flooded. (These places are just a short drive away from me here). Some of the stores my company delivers to will be affected.
.
The Sudbury, Assonet, Blackstone, Charles Rivers are all above flood stage n have so many folks at their mercy, a State of Emergency's been declared in those areas. Rhode Island is also seeing historic flooding in the Pawtuxet River zone.

Photo by SnaggleTooth March 2010 It all translates to more lost school time, homes, business, jobs, n trouble with insurance companies. So much trouble in so little time...
.
I'm feeling very fortunate to live where I do, because this place hasn't been so affected. Knowing about it sure makes me want a rowboat tied to the porch tho...
.
(Pics are the town center wharf, n the flood at the golf course on the way to fav beach after the rain two weeks ago.)
I also reported on MA state flooding in May 2006 on ESR . This week I'm having a heck of a time staying online, btw- (just got a power out during this posting!) Just keep swimming...

Even tho it's still pretty cold this week, the plants listen to their light-hours cue.

These aggressive Tiger Lily sprouts bravely push through the forest floor layers while most other species remain dormant a bit longer, all over the woods right across my road.
Happy sproutlings Spring lovers!

Two

.
This day was too good to be true...
I had a second Day Off in a row! I got to sleep enough hours both days. I got out in warm, but breezy sunshine for errands early today.
.
On display here is my best, close gull pic ever- of two birds! I kid you not, I was less than 6 feet from these sizeable, unalarmed specimens. (No zoom, no crop shot). The wind was gusty, n they apparently had curtailed flight plans to stare at the Sun's afternoon decent from the fishing wharf' rail.
.
Between home, the Town Center area, n Fav Beach zone I took tons of decent pics, n the cam batteries are still good. (how unusual). I got an 8-seedling flower plant flat for $2 at the market. (Last year same one was $4.99). I sighted my first Robins at the golf course. More gull pics availed themselves at the beach also, but not as close.
.
I got home, cooked n ate early, n now have time to relax early. I'm feeling alot better n congestion has finally cleared up. I've procrastinated a few chores n processed some pics. It's so much easier to deal with getting ready for work again after a day like this-

Vernal

Yep it's officially Spring according to the calender. All I did to celebrate was go stand in the sunlight on the 60F degree, windy deck for about five minutes while drinking my tea before work. That was worth every minute. As previouslty mentioned, my days off are now different.
.
I was irked to notice a critter (squirrel?) had dug into the plant container where I buried one of last springs $1 hyacynth bulbs, n took a big bite out of it- I covered it up again, but have no idea if it'll still bloom or not- Bummer! At least my little cedar-like trees are still alive, n getting green in color again. I'd thought they were all dead cause they were so sickly orange last week- but sure enough, they are changing hues! Phew- I really need to repot them all again.

Image by SnaggleTooth March 2010 .
.
.
I should really plant some indoor seeds this week- but I won't have any time to do anything for a few days yet, n taxes are priority. I still have to fill out the census form too. I don't wanna do any of that tho- until the sun hides again.
.
It was so nice out today! Wish I could've celebrated by playing hooky from work...
But me n my hanging on sinus infection, throat-lung buggy, n without any voice, shlepped on into work anyhow- from the bright afternoon sunglare into a windowless environment of hurriedness.

To have no reason to hurry would be my idea of a party these days! Hope you all enjoy your Sunday-
The green is coming, really!

Warm n Dry

Photo by SnaggleTooth March 17 2010
.
.
.
My village has been lucky compared to other areas in the state of Massachusetts this week. We were spared the flooding rains which overflowed many rivers n toppled trees less than a forty minute ride away. Here there was only about 6 inches of rain.
.
Lives have been majorly disrupted yet again. An insurance dude was supposed to inspect my house but that got delayed until other folks dry out a bit. I just spent a whole week cleaning up my winter mess in preparation.
.
I'm not even close to the spring cleaning jobs tho- curtains n rugs all need washing n I'm out of energy already from spackling wall cracks n scraping paint. I'm irked by focusing on cleaning when state tax forms should be priority right now. I know it'll take a few days to read the instructions, due to the state healthcare requirement here n the worksheets.
.
My Day Off was moved around this week, but that allowed me to enjoy this balmy, spring-like weather on it's second day-in-a-row after all those rains. I did pick up some trash near the house, n picked up branches stewn about the yard, after walking uptown (without my winter coat!) to check the mail. There's tons of ugly garbage everywhere, n most in the woods across the road belonged to the kids downstairs who have uncovered barrels. The woods will take many pick-up hikes thru the briars this year to rid it of visible paper n plastic.
.
I have caught a viral bug of some sort, that is giving me a bronchial cough, sinus pressure, n aches, but I'm still functional, TG. It's amazing I can still breathe after all that dust I got into lately- (I'm allergic to dust mites), n have needed the inhaler alot. If there were sick pay for time off work I'd do that now. I don't like getting my work schedule switched around all the time, due to messing up my errand itinerary. Today was good for being around home, at least. (No paycheck yet).
.
By the time that inspection is rescheduled all this stuff will need cleaning again, I suppose! Really, I should've just rested n recovered, n would've liked to putter with the deck plants.
The up-side of my day definately was getting outdoors in the 60F sunlight n seeing the blue sky. I hear the southern US is colder- This weather is normal for April, n we're only half-way thru March.
.
Guess the roof leak is fixed, after getting thru that storm without any dripping in the LR. Now I just need to catch up to the plentiful flaking paint chips. I hope I'm feeling better for work tomorrow too...
Have fun folks...

Spring will leap,

Image by SnaggleTooth March 2010Life zooms away,
So very incomplete.
Assuming you have time,
Never very wise.

So make your calls
Today not later.
Saving for tomorrow
May be for some one else.

Will tomorrow come?
Not for everyone-
Can't know all.

Iso Zone

.
.
Wish I'd gotten out today to take this pic of old pilings n the little private island in the village harbor, (from back in February). I didn't get any new good ones at all- Today it's been spitting a few random showers in the chilly 40Fs.
.
I'm feeling a bit stranded without Little Truck around who's out getting some repairs done. Feels strange to not get out for all the errands I'd planned on. Oh well, minimal is good when rescheduled rest is needed.
.
Yesterday after about three hours of sleep, I was woken up with loud, banging, roof-repairing directly over head. (Maybe it'll stop dripping in my LR). Today I woke myself up to make calls to get progress made on little Truck's current needs. It's true, the aging brain doesn't function properly without 4-6 minimum hours of sleep. Of course a couple of hours is better than none, but really- TG I'm not building any rockets today!
.
On the TV news today they had a story about a mass, White-Sided dolphin stranding in Wellfleet on the "Lower Cape" (I live on the ("Upper Cape"). Two separate groups of sixteen animals are involved. They always get some strandings there, but this many at once hasn't happened before. I always wonder if they're disorientated by storm-shifted sandbars, following changed magnetic fields in the planet, or have panicked running away from large predators like Orca or Tiger, or White sharks (previous. long shark post).
Maybe they're just tired like me...?
.
Dolphins are said to be the most intelligent sea creatures based on the brain-body size ratio. I once read a newspaper article (wish I could find it now somewhere in storage), decribing their underwater communication sounds being compressed cone-shaped images they are projecting long-distance to other dolphins. These focused audio-bursts must this very instant be beaming across the world's oceans to read! There's a visual I imagine often- It's difficult to imagine tho, that such intelligent critters could get so easily fooled n trapped by low tide's slow ebb.
.
So much on Earth remains a mystery. No matter how smart we get, there's just so much the mind is willing to grasp n piece together... Now I hypothesize, that scared dolphins from the Pacific off-shore during today's new Chile Quake zone, somehow relayed messages of "Quick, Run for the hills!" all the way to the North Atlantic. Wouldn't that be something-
.
Perhaps there is a bad game of "Dolphin Telephone" going on...

Kaliedoscopic

Diverse subjects can make nifty, attractive textile designs. I think this one would look good as a tablecloth in my kitchen. That same day a couple weeks back I went under the bridge near the gas station in the center of town, I also took this shot... Then played with effects.

This version makes me feel warm n fuzzy. I think it should be a carpet, or a blanket perhaps. I like Earthtones. Natural scenes can take on strange properties to the eye when artificial effects are applied... Colors have not been changed.

Colorful

.
.
.
Under the town center's Narrows bridge at low tide, I recently spied these oxidizing supports. I applied some effects n voila` another mysterious pic for ESR! Color really does make a big difference in the scene's perception. Seems like another world for my sci-fi imaginings. I perceive a person's profile form wearing a blue shirt on the right side of this pic...
.
I want to thank Joey for suggesting to his readers to use colorizing projects on his Wardrobe Wednesday post graphics ages ago, when first I visited his pad. I really have little graphic wardrobe to show off for that project, but applied it to some photos of my area instead. (Also, I don't stick to a schedule, because ESR is my spontaneous fun). Now I try to change pics this way often, n am pleased with the results.
.
Lynn recently posted about seeing some Andy Warhol art, which reminds me that he invented the colorizing effect on mainstay icons as art. Without him some of these computer generated effects may never have been thought up. He was an ultimate graphic artist. My pics here are a bit less iconic n more detailed images, but the colorizing is what makes them appealing to me, when otherwise they'd be in the "prob not used to post" pile.

I was actually under there trying to get some Loon pics after trying to get some swan pics. The Loons flew away under the bridge. The swans came out too tiny even in crops for good definition. I prob won't use any of those... Someday I'll get a digi-cam with a good, clear zoom. Until then I'll have to be within ten feet of the wild birds to get you a clear shot!
.

.

.
.
I always like the colorized image better than the original...
Yes folks, that "person" is nothing but rocks! One is covered with moss...
