What a waste!

Saturday night there was a huge, 4-alarm fire at SEMASS, the Waste-treatment plant. I learned about it at work, when some one with a scanner called in n told an older co-worker. It's been mentioned on the TV news also, but because no one was hurt from the fire or toxic smoke, it's not a main story anymore. That's a good thing.
...
I lived very close to that site a few years back before it was built amid controversy. Some folks complain they can smell the burning trash while they cook on the outdoor grille. It's a waste to energy facility where they burn garbage to produce energy. It may contribute to pollution n the greenhouse gases, although there's an arguement the filters prevent problems.
...
Now I've time off to clean-up a bit around here. I'd been getting all the winter's recycle stuff packed up to put in the truck, n it's dump time, but now I'm wondering if I'll be able to bring in my full trash barrels n recycles there this week on the way to work, or if I'll have to stock-pile it even longer. The drop-off area is next to that building. It just figures to have to wait again on something I finally pushed myself to get done... I really hate that!
...
There's no town pick-up here, it's all private service n you have to pay to get recylables picked up, too. The plant is within a few miles of my work location, not far off my regular path. The Dump sticker is way cheaper than pick-up service, too. It just happens that this week it's inconveniently smokey. I'll have to miss more sleep to call Town Hall to see what's up over there at some point.

What timing... as I stare at the huge pile I was to unload...

Hey, sweetie! Did ya miss me?
So sorry for the prolonged absence, but my project(s) took much longer than I had expected.

I have garbage pick-up in my town, but that's because we don't have a town dump. As a matter of fact, when I moved into the house (way back), one of the first letters I received was from the town that said residents had no choice on their dumping procedures. The town collected yard garbage on Mondays, and household garbage on Wednesdays. The End.... no arguements, no disputes.... and by the way, it'll cost $36.00 a month. In 14 years it's gone up to $44.00. That said, anything else I wanted to get rid of that they wouldn't handle at the curb would mean a trip to the recycling center where it was free (mostly) to leave stuff. If I wanted to get rid of anything such as appliances, the cost would be $25.00 per appliance. Thank goodness Lowes hauled away the old appliances when I put the new ones in.

I like the idea of having a recycling center in town, and I usually go there a couple of times a month to unload cardboard, phone books, magazines, etc.....and only too glad that the facility is only a couple of miles away from my home, and no stink involved. They also have a big Goodwill truck parked there, so it's kind of like a one stop dumping area.

Spring has sprung here, and that mweans it's cleaning time.... everyday with the amount of pollen we were dumped with this year. It seems as if every tree and bush burst into color at the same time (as if they could not wait out the mild winter we had to do so). Needless to say, dusting is an hourly event.

Hope you will get some quality time off to lounge around the veranda sipping LI ice teas soon!

thankfully most of the towns around here have trash pick up, however it is no longer free. it was "free" (but we had a super high tax rate)that first year we moved here. now we buy special bags that are 75 cents for 19 gallons, and $1.50 for 33 gallons. we also have curbside pick up for recycling. it surprises me that more towns don't offer this service. our town gets paid the more the residents recycle.. and since they started with the pay per throw trash people have been recycling much more resulting in more money for the town.

the town next door they have trash stickers which are $2.50 each.. one per big bag of trash or if you have a trash can you can fill it to the top with bags and only have to use one sticker. they too have curbside recycling pick up.

both systems aren't that bad cost wise for us, and it pays for itself, so the town doesn't have to spend much for the service.

my town does have a dump too, and a "free" store where you can drop of or pick up perfectly good items that were trash to someone else.

i forgot to add that i heard about the seamass fire on the news the other night in the little regional blurbs... so i called christine, and she knew nothing about it.. today she says it was caused b/c someone threw away a propane tank..

my god.. you'd think they would screen for such things before they burn it.

Ellen, you're still alive! WHEW!!!!! I've been worried! Thought your machine died or something- I'm so glad you're OK, n back online.

$40 bux per mos. is alot of mandatory cost- My dump sticker is a one time $10 bux per year, n fuel/time. Just tough getting there when they're open, working nights.
No spring here yet, still wearing long-johns this week!

MB, your per barrel/bag would still be cheaper than the service I used to pay for- never mind the hassle of the noise of three different truck companies coming through on different days of the week! I like the idea of recycling useable trash n treasure stuff.

WBZ news confirmed that a canister or tank must've gone through "the shredder" which occasionally happens with a small explosion, the difference being this one caused a large explosion n fire to spread throughout because of the air-duct systems of the building. It's amazing no one was hurt (Glad I don't run that machine)!

Snag - Well that sucks! I'm sure it smells real pleasant near the fire scene right now. I'd wait if I were you. :)

Peace & Hugs,

Oh yuke! I remember once they wouldn't let us into the dump, it was so bad that even the seagulls were leaving! We have one store to deliver to that is over by the sewage plant, I try not to eat anything before going over in that direction. Happy Easter!

Neo, I went to an alternative recycle drop-off before work today, not the one where the stink, er, fire was. Now I just gotta find more barrels...
