UnFriendly

A chat at the laundrymat today revealed that Tuesday last week our local Friendlies restuarant near my village closed down. Chalk up another empty spot to the nearest Shopping area.
.
They put in a new "Express" spot across town in the newset plaza near my job where so many others have already gone.
.
What was wrong with the way they did this was not to notify anyone, including employees, in advance. They came in for shifts n were told that day was their last. All those folks out of work! I heard from an ex-waitress they were told by the manager it was a corporate descision, n they couldn't do anything about it.
.
There are alot of folks, n retirees here without vehicles who walk or ride the bus. The place here was a favorite spot for many of the older set, n parents with young kids too.
All those regular, daily customers with no where to hang out n visit their friends...
.
They had no problem taking faithful customers money, n using the profits to downsize n take the place away from all those counting on having a spot where they were welcomed.
.
You're not welcome anymore, unless you can get ten miles across town, n there'll be no where to sit n chat, either! (I won't go there-)
.
What does this do for the "Friendlies" corporate image?
(They need a new name...)

I agree. I know a guy who was working in one such company that shut down... let's say overnight! Not fair at all!

Opaque, Very unfair from the manager down to the dishwasher, getting low wages as it is- then in one day unable to pay the next month's rent! Were it me I'd be flipping out-

Friendly's has long had a nasty habit of abandoning poor performing (in their eyes) restaurants in order to open up in a theoretical better location.

Did it a couple of times in my town.

such a shame for those people. i actually heard of this on facebook last night. What are all the band and drama kids going to do after shows now? that was THE place to go after a performance.
with that said I must say the quality of their food has seriously gone down hill and has become a glorified more expensive McDonald's we hardly eat there because I ALWAYS pay for it 30 minutes later, if not sooner.. but the mozzy sticks are good..

It's sad...everything is becoming the same...there is no individuality. There is no sense of community. It's heartbreaking. And to close down without notice is beyond unfair. Don't people have a conscience anymore?

I missed this blog Sorry

Life is hard to make a million a day. Yet they still run things by the bottom dollar and not the heart.

It's all in the bean counters numbers.

G, They openned the Express counter over a month ago. Someone said so far every time they've openned one, the nearby restaurants have been closed. That place was full almost every night!

MB, It's really a bad thing to do for this area. if i had the bucks to open a similar business there, or just a coffee shop, I'd prob make a fortune because of the old regular customers! I haven't had food there except ice cream n Fribbles in awhile- Hadn't tried the new stuff. thanks for the tip!

Talon, you hit the nail on the head about Community, because that's the role it played all these decades. They didn't even notify the manager in advance! I'm sure there are alot of angry folks about this around now-

Ellis, Corporations suck the fun out of everything except their quarterly shareholder profits at everyone else's expense... Yep- n they pick on the smallest peanuts!

That's really sad. And mean. Don't they need to give 2 weeks notice, at least?

Those poor employees. And loyal patrons.

JanF, they didn't have the decency to give any notice- After saying there were no plans to close it when applying for permits with the town in June before openning the Express counter!
Even BBM worked there for a bit- along with many folks I know. Alot of folks here are very angry!
I'll boycott the brand- the ice cream at the market too.

Buddy, You know I was thinking about you missing that spot! I'm too angry at that company to patronize them anymore. Good to see you here again.
